Google announced a new feature within her Google Apps package, the development of websites. Users of the Google Apps are free to create, modify or do whatever they like with pages for company intranet, or even for the internet.

Google Sites

Setting up a page in Google Sites should be as easy as creating a document in a text editor. You do not need any knowledge on HTML or PHP to create a page or complete site, with Google Sites. Users are also able to set who is allowed to take a look at the pages; a small group, the company or even the entire world.

Google expands her empire

Another big step for Google. Creation of webpages was one of the functions that Google didn’t support yet. It wasn’t such a hard guess, that one day Google would create a service in order to do so.

With Google Sites for Google Apps, they have made the first step and I think they will release this service to the mainstream public one day. A great set of features is already ready to be used by users of Google Apps, including;

  • One-click page creation, creating a page is as simple as a single click of the mouse.
  • No technical knowledge required, the application writes code for you, you can create as easy as you can create a document.
  • Customise the pages to make them look great, and give them their own look and feel to suit the company.
  • Lots of templates available, so there will always be one that suites you. And if it’s not you can customise a existing template.
  • File uploads are ready to be used, you can upload up to 10 mb sized files. Up to 1000mb of storage per user is available for free.
  • Rich content is ready to be used, the Google sites integrates with the existing services This means you can use documents and calendars for example, in you pages.
  • Work as a team, you can start working together as there can be multiple developers for a single page.
  • Searching your sites made easy, as you can use Googles search engine to search your own sites.

Google Sites for the worldwide public

As we saw at Google Documents and services like that, Google Sites will be available to the major public in a matter of weeks. This adds a whole new dimension to the services that Google offers already.

Where will we stop, developing the internet? Is there anything that will not be available via the web, in the future? The sky is the limit, as I always say…

My colleague and I spotted it at work today. It will not be applicable to our company’s needs, but it is a very powerful tool Google published there.

Indeed, I don’t think I will use it, since it’s limited in building large websites.

But this is definitely a great piece of coding from Google, which makes it really easy to create small yet effective websites.

Google Page Creator is already active for almost two years, if not longer.

True, but this is google sites, not pages.google.com.

I’ll take a step back and see who wins those markets (as in: Team coordination, biz site… Microsoft has it’s own approach to the subject:

Yeah, but the best news in this case is, that it’s combined with Google Apps for companies! :)

Oh, ok, my fault… The article was about the page creator… Sorry!

Coen Jacobs - 2008-03-04 13:42:09

No, it isn’t about the Page Creator, it’s about the implementation of the tool inside Google Apps! ;)

Ok, to clarify…

I was thinking/talking about:

http://sites.google.com/

And the MS competitor (in a way):

Well, they all mean to do soo much good to us, sometimes I get confused. ;)
