On the great blog Problogger, a guest blogger asked the question; “Have blogs killed conventional websites“? To me, it’s pretty obvious why blogs have much more influence on the internet. We do need to keep in mind that this doesn’t apply to all blogs.

Most blogs won’t reach the status successful. But the blogs that do reach that status, have lots of people following, reading and interacting with the blog. And interaction is the keyword, which is why blogs have more influence and why blogs are more popular than conventional websites.

Blogging is all about interaction

People who say, blogging is just useful for the people who write for it, are totally wrong. If we take a look at the options a article on a blog has, compared to a article on a conventional website we will see that a blog has a lot more to offer.

Readers can post their opinions in the comments on a article, at some websites that is possible too. But for most websites, this is where the fun ends. Blogs have great possibilities that enable other bloggers to respond to the article, by using a trackback.

I’m using a trackback in this article (to the post at Problogger), to let Problogger know that I’m linking to that article and probably will be responding to the specific article. Most likely the author of the blog will check this article out and this way your blog will be promoted!

Blogs are easy, compared to websites

All you need to do, to write a new page or article for your blog, is a connection to the internet and a browser. If you want to edit or post a page on a conventional website, most of the time (without sites that use a CMS) you have to use a FTP-application.

Blogs are more easy to set up, you can setup a blog in 5 minutes on WordPress.com, or simply upload your own installation. If you want to create a new website, it will take several hours of development and configuration, even when you’re using a CMS.

Besides that, blogs tend to get indexed a lot quicker by the search engines, as it happens at normal websites. Using quality plugins like the All in One SEO Pack, your post will be indexed in half an hour and if you’re lucky it’s just a matter of minutes.

The blogosphere is the largest family on earth

All the bloggers on the internet, form one giant family. A family that helps each other out when there is a need to, will always support each others blog and will need the help of each other to make your blog worth visiting.

Bloggers always help each other out and form a giant community on the internet. That’s the reason why blogs have overpowered conventional websites!

While I’d agree with most of your points, Coen, I can’t agree with the original article on Problogger.

I posted my opinion on the Problogger article on my scrapyard (blog).

Perhaps if Google manages to fix that server my blog resides on, interested parties can read it. :-)

Basically, Blogs are strong in what they were made for. They couldn’t compete with corporate websites at the current standard for various reasons.

For corporate/advanced websites they are just a feature to reproduce, not use.

A few years of improvement will certainly re-shuffle those cards.

Off course, blogs aren’t build for housing extreme amounts of content in a easy to be found structure (although there are several options to make this actually work).

But I do agree, when people say that blog hold more (quality) information, as normal websites do!
