If you’re willing to work seriously on a new weblog, or boost your existing weblog, please keep in mind that it is not likely that you will get paid for your efforts in a few weeks. Most popular bloggers are active in the blogosphere for years now, the people that make big money out of their blogs have suffered and worked hard to get to this point.

Before you can sit back and enjoy the income of your blog(s), you will have to suffer, work hard and work even harder. Blogging isn’t always a great thing to do, but you can (try to) make it a great thing to do.
Set some goals, realistic goals
If you’re new in the blogosphere, be realisitic. Nothing will kill your blog faster than setting goals that you can impossibly achieve. If you expect 1,000 subscribers in a single month, I’m afraid I have to disapoint you. There are some exceptions to this rule, but most weblog need a few months to grow.
It will take some time for people to get to know your blog and to be convinced that the blog deserves a spot in their RSS-reader. Every subscriber counts for starting blogs, but there is another factor that you shouldn’t forget.
Getting subscribers is the first step on setting up a succesful, new blog. The second step is much more difficult and it will take a lot more time. Subscribers need to be converted to fans, fans who adore your articles. This takes much time, time in which you need to post quality content to keep them coming back and see that there is another great post on your weblog.
Take all the help you can get
The blogs that grow the fastest are mostly the blogs that are given the most help. There is a big difference between a blog that receives lots of links from major weblogs and a blog that needs to take care of all the links itself.
In the first weeks, perhaps even months, you should take all the help you can get. Scoring on social news sites is a great help on reaching new (potential) readers and your (online) friends can help you do that. Simply ask them to do so, most people won’t hesitate on doing such a small favor, so why not ask?
There are some exceptions
Off course, like in everything, there are some exceptions. There are blogs that simply do the trick in a matter of days. A few days ago someone dropped me a link to SEOnoobs.com, the blog that is growing in popularity at insane speed.
And what to think about Anywired, Skellies new blog? This weblog got 1,100 subscribers in just 5 days. Anywired took advantage of the succes of Skellies original weblog Skelliewag.org. Skellies new weblog recieved lots of links to her new blog, including from her own succesfull blog, which helped greatly in growing so fast.
Nonetheless, Skellie postes great content on both weblog (not to mention guest-posting on other blogs), which on itself is worth reading. It’s great to have big and powerfull blogs linking to your new blog, but most of us won’t have that much luck.
